More precisely, the Wombo App manages to make a person sing with a single portrait image. Whether Angela Merkel, Joe Biden, or a selfie of yourself: Simply select a song, and the lips are animated to match.

Wombo AI: What the hype app can do

Wombo’s range of functions is quickly explained. You either take a picture of yourself or select one from your photo library. The important thing here is that you use as good a picture as possible, look directly into the camera, and don’t show your teeth.

Once you have chosen a picture, you can select a song. The selection of songs is limited but includes classics such as Thriller by Michael Jackson, every time We Touch by Cascada, or I Feel Good by James Brown. Once you have selected a song, Wombo AI automatically creates a video. This usually takes about 30 seconds.

You will then receive your result, an animated image in which the corresponding person moves their lips to match the song. You can share the video directly with other apps and save it in the image gallery.

What about data protection?

The green dot indicates that the camera is currently in use. If you call up the control center, you can see that Wombo is retrieving the camera.

Those who remember the hype about FaceApp, which was massively criticized for poor data protection, will probably take a closer look at the topic of data protection and privacy here as well. First of all, the app’s privacy policy names Wombo Studios Inc as to the publisher. The only way to contact the company is an e-mail address.

In addition to app usage data, the app also stores facial data on its servers. But, the app store data only for the purpose of creating the photo animation and is delete immediately afterward.”

However, when trying out the app, we noticed that the app does not only access the camera while taking a photo. Even afterward, for example, when a song is selected, and the animation is created, Wombo continues to retrieve the camera. However, it is unclear whether this is deliberately caused by the developers or a bug in the app.

Wombo AI: Songs by Frank Sinatra, Green Day, Lady Gaga, and others.

To start, the user only has to select a portrait picture from the photo library and crop it accordingly, or alternatively take a selfie directly via the camera. After that, the user can choose from a few short music clips, for example, “My Way” by Frank Sinatra, “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls, “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish, “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga, “Barbie Girl” by Aqua or “American Idiot” by Green Day.

After selecting the song, the AI-powered conversion process begins, which is interspersed with ads for free users. Afterward, you can see the short video and it save in the photo library. You can see the “WOMBO.AI” approximately after 20-second video clip, if one has not taken out a subscription. The quality of the video is certainly not (Full)HD.

However, the results are surprisingly good and really funny – charming eye bumps and rhythmic movements included. The best results are achieved when the selfie is oriented so that the person is looking directly into the camera, not laughing or showing their teeth, and their face is not obscured by anything.

The app was not found in the store. 🙁
