The kitchen is bursting by household appliances and you are desperately looking for new storage space? In this article, you will find out how to create storage space and completely organize your kitchen. Through some proper approach, you can create more space and order.
It is one of the most frequently used rooms, and that is precisely why it often sinks into chaos. To create storage space you have to completely reorganize your kitchen. Although there is plenty of storage space here, the upper and lower cabinets, drawers, and shelves are jam-packed.
Reorganize your kitchen
You have been hoarding more and more groceries in recent years. Or is it possible that you have distributed dishes and cutlery, pots and pans, spices? And baked goods in the kitchen without any real system? The next time you find yourself looking for something specific for more than five minutes but not finding it. You should perhaps reconsider your organization system and reorganize the kitchen.

Muck out your kitchen
Even if it’s not much fun, mucking out is still necessary. And the first step towards improvement: clear out all the cupboards and drawers in your kitchen. And sort out everything that is broken, duplicated, or unusable. The things either end up in the trash, or you donate the discarded things that are too good to be thrown away but no longer find a place in your kitchen.
In the second step, you should thoroughly clean the kitchen cupboards and drawers once they have been emptied – you won’t be able to do this that quickly, so use it! Before you put all the leftover items back in, it makes perfect sense to divide them into different categories, i.e., crockery and cutlery, pots and pans, cans, and spices.
The same applies to your groceries: divide your stocks so that you always have the foods together you need more often, that you have bought in advance that you need for cooking. Also, please pay attention to which foods are no longer durable so that they do not end up in the trash. This does not apply to canned food; in some cases, the content can be consumed much longer than stated.
Clean up the drawers
Do you also have a kind of “odds and ends” drawer, in which you can store all sorts of things that you think you will find useful again at some point? Here you can bring more order into the system by using a sorting aid. So-called drawer organizers are available in different sizes and different designs. Here is an example:

Always keep everything to hand
Stow all household items in such a way that everything you need frequently is within easy reach. In other words, the drawers near the stove are best suited for the cutlery or the spices you need for cooking – there are also special inserts for this. Pots and pans should be placed near the cooking surface, sharp knives near the work surface. Use a space-saving magnetic strip for this, and it can attach any item to the wall.
Make full use of the interior cabinets
Too often, valuable storage space is wasted: starting with the garbage, which has a place in the base cabinets in many households. Apart from the fact that food residues release moisture and thus mold forms more quickly. The area can be used very well for other purposes. Instead, use a separate trash can with a lid that you put in the kitchen.
Sliding Shelves Kitchen Cabinet
Does your kitchen have a corner cabinet? Where you want to keep a lot of household appliances that you do not use that often because they are hard to reach. Use a special corner swivel cabinet fitting there, which offers space on several levels and can be rotated so that you can easily access everything. The cheaper alternative would be a round cupboard.
Sort your groceries
Regardless of whether you have a pantry or just a drawer or a base cabinet in which you store groceries. There, you can create an order by systematically clearing the stocks. All the products that are used the most are given the best place. There are recommended storage jars that you can get a better overview, which you should add a label (do not confuse salt and sugar) – for example, with a label printer.

Create more storage space
It is particularly difficult to create storage space in small kitchens. You can use BPA free plastic containers that easily fit in a small space. At least that’s what most believe. The fact is that there are a lot of small tricks that can help you get more storage space – no matter how big the room is. Use the doors of the kitchen cupboards to hang smaller items on the inside. There are also special devices for this, such as adjustable curtain rods (kitchen hooks), a door shelf, or a cupboard insert.
Arrange the refrigerator properly
You can also create orders in the refrigerator. Because many people do not know: Each device has different climate zones, i.e. the temperature varies between the individual compartments. Suppose the refrigerator has been set to the recommended average temperature of seven degrees. In that case, the vegetable compartment (at the very bottom) is around twelve degrees, while the top shelf is almost four degrees – and that’s a good reason to make food last longer. However, eggs, milk, and vegetables like it different cold; some foods even have nothing to do with the refrigerator. Therefore, it is best to proceed as follows when putting away.
- The vegetable compartment at the bottom of the refrigerator is best for sensitive foods such as salad, fruit, and vegetables. The temperature here is between ten and 13 degrees.
- All food that perishes quickly, such as fresh fish and meat, but also sausage and cheese, should be stored in the bottom compartment. The temperature here is between four and five degrees.
- All dairy products feel comfortable in the middle compartment, i.e. quark and yogurt dishes, cream and milk, but also fresh eggs. The temperature here is ideally between six and seven degrees.
- It is warmest in the top compartment, as warm air rises to the top. It is best to store already prepared dishes or sauces and jam here. The temperature here is between seven and ten degrees.
You can check the temperatures with a special thermometer for the refrigerator.
There are also different climate zones in the refrigerator door. The best way to arrange the food is as follows:
- Drinks come all the way down – except for the milk, it’s too warm there for them.
- Mustard, ketchup, and mayonnaise or dressings go into the middle compartment.
- Butter and margarine, foods that last a long time, are placed in the upper compartment.
And one last note: tomatoes, lemons, garlic, onions, avocados, and bananas do not belong in the refrigerator. These foods should be stored at room temperature, as they cannot develop their full aroma in cold temperatures.
